Riders on the storm

Livia Giuggioli. I have a dream.

Do you have any favourite designers? What do you like or dislike about fashion?
There are many designers I love and respect, but I have never been a ‘fashion person’ or very much interested in fashion until I got involved in the Green Carpet Challenge and suddenly had to do my homework! I find it so exciting that there are more and more talented designers who are now working in ‘green fashion’, a term I don’t really like but for which I mean that type of fashion that takes into consideration two fundamental aspects: environmental impact and social justice.  During the two years of red carpets and awards seasons, I worked with great designers such as Jeff Garner from Prophetik, Orsola De Castro from From Somewhere, Gary Harvey (who did my Oscar dress this year), Henrietta Ludgate, and so on….  I love the creativity in the fashion industry, but I hate the wastefulness that is involved in today’s fast fashion.  We have lost the connection between what we wear and its designer. But it’s great to see that things are finally changing…

Why didn’t anyone think of this before?

It would seem that besides the conceptual background of your objects, there is also a sense of surprise, an immediacy in approach, right? Yes indeed, there is a sense of surprise. Most of the time we get this kind of feedback of: “why didn’t anyone think of this before?!” For example, the key we designed; it’s just a big key, something you can obtain directly.  You don’t need to read two pages of text to understand what it is or how to use it. But all those things, need to be done in order for everybody to understand it, its function and to talk about a company’s know-how.

So, there is a mix of everything. That’s why each project is always in a different context and the result can be really different in terms of shapes, materials and things like that. Yet at the same time all these projects are always linked in that we want to make an honest product which is accessible not just in terms of the price but more importantly so that a person can say “ok, I can have that object in my house”.

Nuclear for breakfast

If I really have to force myself and be convinced that 2011’s nuclear stations are safe, the following doubts still linger:

1) Is nuclear energy really the most efficient response we have toward the energy crisis? Wouldn’t it make sense to invest more research into other alternative resources so that it would sufficiently meet our energy needs?
2) Isn’t it time that we began thinking of more sustainable ways of using natural resources and stop our mass consumerism in which we throw away most of what we produce, including food?
3) Finally, my last doubt and what really scares me: the handling and disposal of radioactive waste already in the hands of unscrupulous individuals willing to do anything to make a profit. I’m talking about mafias, common criminals as well as those politicians who protect them. Who can guarantee that they’re not there rubbing their hands in hopes of getting contracts for constructing new plants or disposing waste which, if done without following norms and protocol, will render huge earnings?

Five o'clock pm

There are no doubts. Everywhere in the UK, five o’clock pm is tea time, an experience that sooner or later we will all have had, both celebs and normal people, and is so important that it has not only been dedicated a “tea council”, but it has also won over an unexpected target, children!

Before the poison

Wishing well

On the next 36th >bmm, a fashion magazine.

There is a real void in today’s society: desire. We binge and stuff ourselves with objects yet our ability to fantasize, imagine, think and wait for them (even in vain), has been taken away. This malaise of excess-desire’s trap- is what prevents us from doing without; and with it, every person’s individuality dies as well.
